It manufactures polyurethane foam. The products manufactured are: foam mattresses, foam sheets, cushions and pillows and it is also a significant producer of uPVC pipes from 20 mm to 250 mm. The company employs 150 people and its customers are Public Sector – Hospitals and Schools. It invested in setting up the first local production line producing uPVC pipes diameter range 315 to 450 mm with a UK based partner and with the help of the Dutch PSI programme. For this Flowtech Ltd. was established in 2013. Before, diameters above 250 mm were being imported from Botswana and South Africa.
Flowtech is now the first production line for the larger uPVC pipes in Malawi. They are produced up to MBS and ISO standards. Reliability, quality, innovation and competitive pricing is its trademark.
It benefits local customers in many ways. First of all pricing is at least 20% less due to local production. Transport of pipes is largely transport of air and thus very costly. Secondly, it is easier if after sales service is present locally in case of damage or problems. Thirdly, ordering smaller amounts after miscalculations or expansions is not a problem as the product is available locally. This saves money and prevents having long delays having to wait for pipes coming from South Africa or Botswana.
Furthermore, as Malawi has a big shortage of foreign exchange, local purchase can be done in local currency.
